About the Film
Fresh from its premiere at SCAD in Atlanta, Freedom comes to Tupelo’s Link Centre.
Freedom, a captivating blend of avant-garde music and evocative lyricism, is interpreted through metaphorical imagery and mesmerizing choreography. The film explores themes of self-affirmation (through both a personal and sociological lens), ancestral veneration, and the ongoing struggle for liberation.
The film’s rich storytelling amplifies the song Freedom , created by Asia Rainey-Ani, featuring music co-produced with her husband, Karega Ani (Rebel Scribe Productions). Karega, a formidable writer and performer in his own right (My Big Black Audacity, Black Ivory, etc.), brings his dynamic sound as a music producer to the project, making it a true artistic collaboration.
“This film is not just a story—it’s a conversation about what it means to be free, individually and collectively, while honoring the roots and voices of those who came before us,” says Rainey-Ani.
Professor of Film (SCAD) and director Nabila Lester adds, ” Freedom is about our connection to the past and the FUTURE. Freedom is about the state of one’s own internal journey to self liberation because one cannot truly experience freedom externally until they achieve freedom internally. No one can enslave you if your soul is FREE.”
Asia Rainey-Ani, a celebrated multidisciplinary artist with over 25 years of performance experience across several continents, is known as a culture-bearer; she delivers compelling works that delve into spirituality, self-reflection, family, love, and social justice. Freedom continues her tradition of thought-provoking storytelling that moves audiences deeply.
